Functional Training

What is Functional Strength Training?

“Functional strength training should be thought of in terms of a movement continuum. As humans, we perform a wide range of movement activities, such as walking, jogging, running, sprinting, jumping, lifting, pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, turning, standing, starting, stopping, climbing and lunging. All of these activities involve smooth, rhythmic motions in the three cardinal planes of movement-sagital (front to back), frontal (Side to side)  and transverse (rotational).”   Click here for the full article from the American Council of Exercise

My background starts with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology (the study of human movement) so I believe in functional movement (or asking the body to work as a unit versus single joint movement or bodybuilding type training).  I look at training as a continuum that incorporates 1) Strength and Flexibility 2) Proper Movement Patterns 3) Sport Application and Power.  I assess each person’s movements and then will focus their training into whatever categories they need focused on.

My personal belief is that functional strength training starts with correcting and improper movements, then strengthening the new patterns.  With that being said, everyone can benefit from functional strength training, as the whole point is to become stronger through coordinated movement.
